Course Outline
The course will be held over a 6 week period on Saturdays. We will cover the basic techniques you need to put a short film together.
Camera Techniques – Film making is more than just point and shoot. You need to know how to use your camera to it’s best, you don’t need a €20k camera to make it look good. Controlling the look of the film and operating the camera. Get the most out of your camera (exposure, white balance, shutter speed, focal distances, camera angles as a narrative tool, handheld, tripod)
Basic Lighting – Lighting is a very important subject when making a film of any kind. You need to know what light you have and how to best use it. Using light to paint the scene, creating mood through light. (gels, diffusion, intensity of light, colour temperatures, high contrast & low contrast lighting, 3 point lighting set up)
Sound – Most major films use a technique called ADR in post production. ADR stand for “Automated” or “Automatic Dialog Replacement”. Dialog that cannot be salvaged from production tracks must be re-recorded in a process called looping or ADR. Bringing moving pictures to life through sound. (Capturing clear dialogue, the importance of atmos & wild tracks. Sound problems: Peaking, distortion, off-mic. Types of mic: omni-directional, cardiod, shotgun. Mono, stereo, line mic. Sound editing: music and track laying, mixing, spot effects)
Directing - The role of the Director on and off the set. Working with actors, interacting with other crew members, congruent vision of final film.
Producing - The role of the Producer from pre to post production. Learn how to efficiently timetable and structure the shotlist into a working shooting order.
